Step 1: The first step when it comes to planting a tree is researching the specific tree you plan to plant. Learn what kind of nutrients it needs and what area is ideal for healthy growth. Once you have done this it’s time for the fun part, digging the hole. Dig your hole 2-5 times the width of the root ball and downward approximately 3 times the height of the root ball. Once this is done, fill your hole with water and allow it time to fully drain. This will moisturize the surrounding soil and create a healthy space for the tree to establish. (Baby trees require lots of water)
Step 2: It’s time to put your research to the test and mix together your compost, topsoil, and any extra nutrients the tree requires. Once this is done you can begin to fill your hole. Fill the hole in 6-inch increments and be sure to mist the hole as you go. Be careful not to pack down the mixture too much as oxygen is important for baby tree roots. Once you have filled approximately half of the hole, you can create a new mixture of 1/3 compost, 1/3 topsoil, and 1/3 soil that you dug up.
Step 3: Once your hole has been filled to a point when placing your tree inside leave the top of the root ball level with the surrounding ground you are set. Begin to place your mixture around the root ball and lightly pat it down. Continue to fill your hole until you have only 2-5 inches left to go. Water your hole, then begin pouring mulch. Once you have fully covered the hole with mulch, give your tree a light misting.
Step 4: Water your tree daily for the first 1-2 weeks after planting, for the next 3-12 weeks water every 2-3 days. (Even if it is cold out) After 12 weeks water weekly until the roots are established.
