Firstly, it’s important to remove any dead or diseased branches from your trees. These branches can be a hazard during winter storms, and can also weaken the overall health of the tree. Prune your trees carefully, making sure not to remove any healthy branches. Trees are dormant in Winter making it the best time to prune your trees as it is less stressful on them than during the growing season. Trees also maintain larger energy reserves in the winter leading to faster healing post-pruning. Healthy wound closure is important for pruned trees, pruning before buds open in the spring allows for optimal wound closure, yet another reason why winter pruning is very important.

Be sure to water your trees regularly throughout the winter. While trees do not require as much water as they do during the growing season, they still require some moisture to stay healthy. Water infrequently and deeply, allowing the water to soak the soil.

Another thing you can do to protect your trees from the dropping temperatures is to wrap them in a protective layer. This is especially important for younger trees, which are more susceptible to damage from freezing temperatures. Use burlap or a generic tree wrap to cover the trunk making sure not to wrap it too tightly.

Follow these tips, and you can help your trees thrive throughout the cold and into the warm!
